Shame On You Pop-Tarts

I was watching television the other day and I ran across a cartoon commercial for Pop-Tarts where a bunch of kids go to an ice cream stand and get a sandwich of Pop-Tarts and ice cream, bowls of ice cream with a Pop-Tart sticking out, and Pop-Tarts on a stick like an ice cream bar. For real???

Let me break down that Pop-Tart for you. My strawberry Pop-Tart box lists the serving size as ONE Pop-Tart even though they are bagged in pairs. The nutrition facts for ONE Pop-Tart are: 200 calories, 5 grams of fat, 170mg of sodium, 17 grams of sugar and 2 grams of protein. So the commercial promotes the eating of TWO Pop-Tarts with a thick layer of ice cream in the middle so a better representation of the "happy" kids would give them the body shape of a soccer ball.

I see this as a gross irresponsibility in advertising. With the U.S. having the highest childhood obesity rates we desperately need some kind of corporate responsibility in advertising. I know you are going to say "...but Tasty, it is the parents job to make nutritional choices for their children..." and to that I am going to say that 85% of parents cave in and give their children all the sugary crap they want just to shut them up.

Have you watched kids get off the bus at any elementary school? A majority of them are morbidly obese. Many are carrying double the acceptable weight for their age and height. These are the kids that will endure the potentially fatal ravages of coronary artery disease in their thirties. Parents you are KILLING your children. This is like drowning your child in a vat of fat until it slowly suffocates. Why did you even bother having a baby?

I was counseling some morbidly obese woman couple weeks back, her 2 morbidly obese middle aged sons were with her during the counsel. She was complaining about the cost of her medication and how she hated taking it.
I mentioned the connection between all her disease states and obesity and how if she does not help her children now by instilling healthy eating habits, they too will be on the same meds very soon.

She threw a fucking fit and told me she was going to contact corporate and tell them how rude I am and get me fired...hahaha

I hate fatties that instill their fatty lifestyle upon their children.

Did'ja see that Pop-Tarts come out with 20% of the recommended daily fiber amount? Nope, they don't
'clean up their advertising act' by packaging them as singles. Nope, they don't bother to reduce the sugar content. Nope, there's not really that much less fat per pastry. They got me on the first package when I saw the high fiber content and hadn't eaten yet eaten breakfast, but they tasted just like I remember Pop Tarts tasted 20years ago, and the super-sweetness was NOT going 'hook' me to undermine resolve for more fiber over less caloric intake.

What is profoundly disturbing is the level of 'hate' espoused when mentioning 'fatties' like is this the new label for people 'we' don't like e.g. 'male chauvinist pig' from the 70's.

I saw this commercial too and couldn't believe it. I think the reason it was a cartoon is because an ice cream sandwich made from two Pop Tarts would be massive and I can't imagine a parent thinking that would be an acceptable treat for a kid (although I'm sure some do...)

I guess this is Pop Tart's way of trying to stay relevant, but damn if they didn't come up with some terrible ideas!

Thank you! I developed diabetes just watching that commercial. I thought I was the only one horrified by this. Why hasn't the FDA yanked this commercial off the air??
